They are active at night.

The limbs are slender and long. The genus Nephrurus, however, has short limbs, a large head, and a carrot-shaped tail with a small knob at the tip. The genus Phyllurus has a broad, leaf-shaped tail and cryptic colouration. The body is covered with spine-like tubercles. They are oviparous. The female lays 2 eggs that develop for 65 days; approximately 10 clutches are produced per year. Their breeding season runs from July to February. They overwinter for several months at temperatures from 8°C to 15°C. Underwoodisaurus milii forms aggregations and remains in a shelter throughout the day, which is atypical for this species.
