Zoology-2013. Results
I present to you the outcome of the second-year students' work in vertebrate zoology. There have never been as many failing grades as this year. A detailed breakdown of scores is provided, with instructions on when and how to record grades in the grade books and how to retake failed assessments. In addition, links are provided to material discussing how to prepare...
Dear second-year students, I present to you the results of your work in the vertebrate zoology course.
Unfortunately, the results are staggering: there have never been so many failing grades in the vertebrate zoology course — 32 students (41%) scored fewer than half the available points and received FX! At the same time, a considerable number of students successfully fulfilled all requirements and received top marks: 19 students achieved an A. That the requirements were not excessive can be demonstrated by the fact that 6 female students (Bobrova, Kit, Mykhailenko, Ptushko, Pyrina, Sapozhnikova) earned 100 points out of 100 possible.
As I had said, those who worked consistently throughout the semester and passed all topics successfully achieved good results. The failing grades were the consequence of the strategy whose dangers I warned about many times: not submitting topic assignments during the semester in the hope that everything could be passed at the final examination. The fact that the course students divided into those who worked and those who did not resulted in the most numerous grades being failures and top marks — the outcomes of those who failed their coursework and those who successfully completed it. Very few students received C or D grades.
The grades for the examination test were assigned with exceptional leniency. An E was awarded to those whose proportion of correct answers fell in the range of one-fifth to one-third (20% to 33%) — by all standard criteria, these should have been failing grades. The examination papers were graded blind, in an anonymised format — the results are what they are.
Please note how many of you did not answer some of the questions that were compulsory for you. There is a significant difference between the absence of an answer (0 points) and a failing grade, FX (one-quarter of the possible points). We awarded FX during the grading of tests and questions for an attempted submission, and those of you who made no effort whatsoever to answer the questions suffered greatly as a result.
As you can see, I have combined in a single table the grades and the number of points awarded for each. The different components carry weights of 8, 12, or 16 points.

Students who received passing grades may submit their grade books through their group leaders on Monday, 17 June (or on Tuesday, 18 June, and also on Friday, 21 June).
Dear students who received failing grades! You still have an opportunity to improve your grade during the examination period. I am prepared to examine you on 21 June (the day before departure for field practice), at 12:00. The results from partial topic submissions that in your case did not lead to a passing grade are hereby annulled. All of you will be required to answer all 6 questions on your examination ticket. The list of 120 questions is known to you. I strongly advise you to make an effort and provide concise answers to ALL of the questions set for you. Prepare diligently! You will receive a passing grade if you are able to write something substantive in response to each of these questions.
Please note: the characterisation of a taxon requires a description of the diversity of its representatives, not the features of the comparative anatomy of the group to which it belongs. The reason for many reduced marks on the examination was that you indulged in speculation on topics of comparative anatomy rather than answering the question that was actually posed.
And finally, all of you — both those who worked successfully through the semester and those who did not — must prepare for field practice! Recommendations on what is required for it are available here. Some information about the previous field practice can be found here.
Let us carry out the field practice as successfully as possible!
