They live in southwestern North America and northern Mexico, inhabiting deserts and preferring rocky terrain. Lizard body length up to 15 cm. Most often the tail is longer than the body itself. No bony outgrowths or spines. When threatened, they can run on their hind legs. In danger they emit a thin squeal. During the egg-laying period, females become somewhat brighter than usual.
