Body length without tail 6–11 cm.
Coloration is cryptic, in grey, brown, yellowish or greenish tones; on the dorsal side, 2 zigzag dark lines or round spots may be present.
The ventral side is pale.
Active at night.
The family includes both viviparous (Hoplodactylus, Naultinus) and oviparous (Oedura, Rhacodactylus) genera; clutch size is 2 eggs. The genus Eurydactylodes produces a sticky secretion from paired glands on the tail. The tail serves as an auxiliary grasping organ. In the genus Rhacodactylus, the tip of the tail is equipped with adhesive plates. The digits are connected by a webbed membrane.
