Family Eleutherodactylidae — Rain Frogs Genera — 4 (Adelophryne, Phyzelaphryne, Eleutherodactylus, Diasporus). Species — 205. Range — North, Central and South America from Texas (USA) and Mexico to Peru and Brazil, as well as the Greater and Lesser Antilles.

They feed on insects.
Size ranges from 1 cm to 5 cm; males are smaller than females.
Males (Eleutherodactylus coqui) can produce sounds up to 80 dB. Some species have adhesive pads on their feet and move well through trees (Eleutherodactylus coqui).
The species Eleutherodactylus limbatus lacks webbing and adhesive pads.
Direct development is characteristic of many species. The only viviparous species is Eleutherodactylus jasperi. Eleutherodactylus schwartzi and Eleutherodactylus jasperi are listed in the Red Book; since 2004 they have been classified as critically endangered species.
