The Invisible Head and Everything Else

Video recording of the public lecture “Multi-Level Selection in Hierarchical Systems: Scenarios of the Invisible Hand, the Invisible Foot, and the Invisible Head”

On February 22, 2017, I (D.Sh.) delivered a public lecture as part of the Intellect Networking science and outreach project. Here, following the announcement of this event, its video recording and presentation slides are posted. The author will be grateful for substantive discussion of the ideas presented. Multi-Level Selection in Hierarchical Systems: Scenarios of the Invisible Hand, the Invisible Foot, and the Invisible Head Biological evolution manifests at different levels. Which of them is the leading one: the level of the “selfish gene,” the “selfish organism,” or the “selfish group”? Both manifestations of the “selfish gene” (selection at the gene level) and manifestations of the “selfish group” have been proven in certain cases. But how does selection at different levels combine? If selection at different levels acts in opposite directions, which level’s selection prevails? How do the results of multidirectional selection in multilevel systems depend on their design? Final answers to these questions have not yet been found, but the search for them is a most fascinating task. The lecture will examine various examples of multilevel systems: population systems, organisms, populations of bacteria and humans, social and economic systems. I realized what the science should be called that describes how the design of multilevel systems determines the outcome of their functioning. Procrustology. This word was coined by the great Stanisław Lem in the science fiction novel “Eden.” The human spacecraft in this novel accidentally lands on a planet with a totalitarian and highly stratified society. There are no “authorities” in this society at all. The outcome of the functioning of all structures, and all the restrictions they impose on their members, are determined by their organization. These are stable (Nash equilibrium) states in which the Invisible Head ensures the realization of necessary functions, while the Invisible Foot blocks everything else. Nevertheless, I hope that the study (and in particular, the modeling) of the phenomena discussed in the lecture will not lead to such burdensome consequences.
