Leiocephalidae

Leiocephalidae, masked or curly-tailed ground iguanas Species of masked iguanas inhabit the West Indies; two species have been introduced to Florida. The family includes one genus with 29 species. They occur in arid habitats. The tympanic membrane may be covered anteriorly by a broad figured scale. Rows of scales with sharp keeled crests may be present on the back. These crests disappear on the neck but are well developed on the tail. During the breeding season, some males develop black longitudinal stripes on the neck. In danger, they may feign death. In an excited state, they often curl the tail over the back.
