They inhabit New Zealand. These frogs live in mountain streams with clean, cold water, and in forests at elevations up to 2,000 m above sea level.
They are active at night or during rain.
During the day they are inactive.
Reproduction occurs in September and October.
Males are deaf and recognize each other visually. Amplexus takes place underwater. Fertilization is internal. The tadpoles of all 4 species are endotrophic and do not feed.
