Limnodynastidae
Family Limnodynastidae The family includes 43 species.
It is distributed in Australia and New Guinea. The family Limnodynastidae consists primarily of small frogs (13–36 mm). All members of the family are terrestrial frogs that are active either at night or at dawn or dusk. As with most other nocturnal or crepuscular frogs, Australian ground frogs dislike air that is too dry, as it often is during the day. Instead, they come out at night when the sun has set and the temperature begins to cool, to become moistened. Some frogs during drought periods do not venture outside even at night if the air is too dry, which happens once a year and can last for several months. During this time, some frogs burrow into the ground to avoid desiccation. These frogs appear to screw themselves into the ground. They enter summer dormancy (aestivation). They become active again when the rains begin. Limnodynastes salmini Notaden bennetti Neobatrachus sudelli 1. Amphibian Species of the World 2.
