On February 27, 2019, a biology Olympiad was held among students of the Faculty of Biology at V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University. Fifteen students took part. Congratulations to the winners: Heorhii Bondarenko (3rd year), who took 1st place, and Roman Trokhymchuk (4th year), who took 2nd place. Pavlo Otriazhii (5th year) lagged behind Trokhymchuk only insignificantly, but still received only 3rd place. Everyone who participated did great! It is good that quite a few first-year students also tested their abilities. Bondarenko and Trokhymchuk should go to Melitopol for the next stage of the Olympiad. Overall, the results are easiest to present as a fragment of the spreadsheet used for calculations. The calculation method is clear from the formula row, which shows the content of the selected cell. The tasks were prepared and answers checked by Yu.

For each plant, provide the species name, indicate its taxonomic position, and list taxonomic and biological features characteristic of this plant group. Task 2 On the website of one fast-food chain there is an advertisement for pizza listing its ingredients. Name the species of living organisms most likely used in preparing this pizza. If the species is not directly indicated in the ad, explain how it was used. If raw material underwent biological (not purely culinary) processing, describe it. Additional points are awarded for giving the Latin name and correct taxonomic position of each species (at least at phylum/division + order level). Task 3 You have probably heard the phrase: “while you eat pineapple, pineapple eats you.”

What does this mean? Which group of substances causes this effect? Give examples of substances with similar biochemical properties that participate in digestion in the human body. Task 4 Describe the significance of hydrogen bonds for the functioning of biologically important molecules. Task 5 Describe characteristic structural features of the river crayfish. Draw schemes of its external morphology and internal structure, and add all necessary labels. Congratulations to the winners!
