Ecology and behavior: Most species are terrestrial, inhabiting or living near water bodies, but there are also arboreal forms (in the tropics). During mating, the male clasps the female from behind the forelimbs. Eggs are mainly deposited in water, but in the tropics there are known cases of direct development of terrestrial eggs and various forms of parental care. Morphological characteristics: Length from 3 to 32 cm. Terminal toe phalanges lack intercalary cartilages. The body is usually slender, with long (jumping) hind limbs. External appearance is highly variable. Parotoid glands are absent. The pupil is horizontal and elliptical. The upper jaw bears teeth (the lower jaw does not). Webbing between toes is usually well developed.
