Scaphiopodidae

Scaphiopodidae – North American spadefoot toads Genus Scaphiopus Species Scaphiopus couchii Species Scaphiopus holbrookii Species Scaphiopus hurterii Genus Spea Species Spea bombifrons Species Spea hammondii Species Spea intermontana Species Spea multiplicata North American spadefoot toads are widely distributed across North America (Fig. 1). They resemble the European spadefoots (Pelobatidae) in external appearance (Fig. 2–9). Body length does not exceed 10 cm; the head is short, the body is broad and stocky, the limbs are short and powerful. Like the Old World spadefoots, they possess hardened heel tubercles (spades) that aid in burrowing; the eyes and supraorbital ridges are positioned high on the head. The skin is smooth and gland-rich, with cryptic coloration adapted to arid landscapes. Spadefoot toads spend much of their time underground, are excellent burrowers, and are active at dusk. They feed on a variety of invertebrates. Reproduction takes place in temporary pools after rainfall, to which the exceptionally rapid larval development of the tadpoles is an adaptation.
