Emergency Exit for Mr. Kernes
Sketches from a rally in support of the secretary of the Kharkiv city council
I am, of course, amazed that in order to defend the right of our precious and unsinkable mayor to face criminal charges, the resources of all communal services of Kharkiv were used. It is very correct that the GPU is prosecuting Kernes on criminal, not political charges. But even for organizing a rally with city money, one could have "added" something else. It so happened that I was going to work around 12 o'clock. I get out and see... Kernes's "army"! Communal workers. In formation.
In helmets.
In a single impulse... There are not many ordinary citizens.
They huddle to the side.
Some communal workers walk alone... ...but most have already formed ranks.
Under Lenin, there is their own group of activists, with a flag that I now associate primarily with the pogrom of March 1st.
Most are "reds," and in front, you see, are the "greens." The police are on the sidelines.
It doesn't look much like a spontaneous expression of the people's will.
Interesting groups of people are marching in formation.
The mayor's fans?
Their faces are very expressive...
Near the university, there is a fire truck and an ambulance.
Just in case.
And this is what it looks like from the university window.
Only the glass is shaking - boom, boom - from the drumbeats amplified by loudspeakers.
