Zoology-2012. Results and Final Assessments
{ "title": "", "summary": "", "body": "And so we have completed the vertebrate zoology course. Now it's time for practice. Grades and their calculation mechanism are here. Congratulations to the excellent students - they make up 29%, 24 people! After the table with the results, you will find the conditions for re-exams for those who didn't pass." }
Well, here we are — we have finished the course of vertebrate zoology.
Ahead is the field practice. The grades and the mechanism for calculating them are below. In the table below, the columns corresponding to the modules are built three times. The first time these are the grades obtained during the semester (one grade for the first module, two each for the next three). The calculation is as follows: A – 8 points, B – 7 points, C – 6 points, D – 5 points, E – 4 points, FX – 2 points. The second group is the additional questions on the exam. If a student did not write an answer to these questions on the exam, the points earned during the semester were used in the calculation; if he did, the exam grade was used (with the grades for modules II, III and IV multiplied by two). Then come the grades for the question on mammals (the "value" of the grade was multiplied by 1.5 and rounded up), the general question, and the exam test (the "values" of the grades were multiplied by two). Of course, I did all these calculations automatically, in the Statistica program; without it, I'm afraid, I would have got tangled in the computations. Check them: I tried to grade as liberally as possible. If I saw that a student fell just short of the level for a higher grade, I reviewed the work, once more trying to find some additional merits in it in order to raise the grade. In a couple of cases I simply added a small number of missing points (shown in the "bonus" column). The same column accounts for a certain number of points for additional merits (discussed here).
In one case this column reflects a lowering of the grade for a re-drawn exam ticket. As you understand, this corresponds to the distribution of points I warned you about at the very beginning of the course.
I repeat the illustration that was given on the page I linked to, once more.Then in the table there are five columns showing the distribution of points that will be entered into your record book: how much was earned for the first four modules (what went into the calculation: semester or exam) and the number of points earned on the final assessment (the two main exam questions, the exam test and the bonuses). You will, of course, be most interested in the last two columns (highlighted in bold): the total number of points and the final grade. Note that the point-earning system I use in this course is built so that it "forgives" individual failures. No single component of the grade contributes excessively to the final result. It seems to me that the grades, on the whole, are quite good, and reflect the fact that your course worked quite decently. Congratulations to the top students — they make up 29%, 24 people! Here is how the final grades were distributed. Of course, the 13 failing grades and the two students who did not show up at all (completely ignoring all forms of assessment, including the exam) (Bilykh and Tryfanova) are saddening. However, I insist that these people should blame themselves. More important is that those who worked systematically received good grades. So, the most detailed table is here. On the same Tuesday I submit the sheets to the dean's office. Regarding the failing grades. What deadline for a re-take is the last one for inclusion in the session, I do not know. It will be determined by the dean's office, and I will fulfil those requirements. Given that on Thursday everyone leaves for the biological station, there is simply no time for re-takes. I am prepared to accept re-takes at the biological station, in Haidary; it is not feasible for me to accept re-takes either this Tuesday or this Wednesday. Moreover, this is connected with the fact that all those who received failing grades fall far short of the level that can be considered satisfactory. These people did not work during the semester, and in order to pass vertebrate zoology they will have to spend enough time to learn it. The re-take procedure differs from the procedure for earning points during the semester and on the exam.
All those who take a re-take answer briefly and concisely all 6 questions of the ticket (regardless of which modules they passed, which they wrote earlier, and which they did not). A maximum of 1 astronomical hour is allotted for this. The earning of the grade by components was completed when the table given here was compiled. Answers on the re-take will be graded as follows: questions on all modules and the question on mammals — 16 points each, the general question — 20 points (100 in total). By the way, one of the failing grades belongs to a third-year student (as does the only grade of E). These are foreign students who received failing grades last year. One passed all the modules and answered both questions on the exam; although the result was poor, it was possible to raise it to a weak C. The second passed only two modules out of four during the semester, and on the exam handed in a blank sheet, without even trying to answer. And, at the end — a "masterpiece". There is, it seems to me, something not good in collecting students' mistakes. To rejoice in another's foolishness is bad. But sometimes it is very hard to refrain. This is the complete answer of one of the students to the question of how a human displays the features of the taxa to which he belongs.
A student of a national university (in the third century of its history), who successfully finished school and successfully entered the university, writes: This is part of the answer to the question about the orders Procellariiformes and Charadriiformes in the module devoted to birds.
