Dear colleagues! For several years now, at the opening of successive International Conferences of Young Scientists "Biology: from Molecule to Biosphere," organized by the Faculty of Biology of Kharkiv National University named after V.N. Karazin, renowned scientists have been delivering keynote lectures and then conducting roundtable discussions. In 2008, at the opening of the III conference, Alexander Alexandrovich Nikolsky, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor at the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia, and member of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas, delivered a lecture and conducted a roundtable. In 2009, at the IV conference, Alexander Vladimirovich Markov, Doctor of Biological Sciences and leading researcher at the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, served in the same role (his lecture is posted here). In 2011, Anatoly Ilyich Protopopov, author of original ideas concerning human behavior, delivered a lecture at the V conference, conducted a roundtable discussion, and presented his new book. An account of Protopopov's presentation is given here. In 2012, we are expecting the participation of Alexander Pavlovich Rasnitsyn in our conference. Alexander Pavlovich is one of the world's leading paleoentomologists; he is a Doctor of Biological Sciences and Professor at the Paleontological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Among Rasnitsyn's many achievements are the creation of the concept of adaptive compromise, contributions to the study of macroevolution and biocenotic crises, and participation in the development of the epigenetic theory of evolution (a fragment of his work on ETE has long been available on this site, on Batrachos). The plans are as follows. On November 20, at the opening of the VII International Conference of Young Scientists "Biology: from Molecule to Biosphere," Alexander Pavlovich will deliver a lecture titled "Insects at the Permian-Triassic boundary: what is a biocenotic crisis?" (presentation authors — Rasnitsyn A.P., Aristov D.S.). On November 21, he will conduct a roundtable on the topic "Modern trends in the development of evolutionary biology and phylogenetics." Both events are open to all interested persons.
