I have already written that because of activist environmentalists I am sometimes ashamed to call myself an ecologist. If you have formed an idea of ecology from media sources, you will understand my profession completely incorrectly. Ecology is a respectable science that emerged as a separate branch of biology relatively recently, about a century and a half ago. Unfortunately, its name has fallen into the wrong hands, and some strange companions have joined. One has to distinguish real ecology from its unscientific imitations.
