Zoology-2011. Results Before Module III
The results of student work in the vertebrate zoology course after the first two modules have been completed and the third is beginning. Explanation of the method for calculating points.
Dear second-year students, I draw your attention to the fact that in the course of vertebrate zoology the first 24 points out of 100 have now been distributed (you may think of them as one quarter of the points). I repeat here the slide that was previously shown in the description of the “rules of the game” (/node/5). This is the distribution of points across the course.
Last year I calculated points using fractional values; this year I promised the dean’s office that I would stop doing that. Among other things, here is the reason: when some of you enter the master’s program and others find the barrier lowered in front of them, the decisive factor will be the total number of points you have earned in the courses you studied. The dean’s office calculates this sum, and they do not want to pull figures with fractional “tails” from all the grade sheets.
So, for the first module your overall grade counts toward the total sum, while for the second (and subsequent) modules two grades count: one for the test and one for topic reporting, that is, for reporting the topic. The point values of these two forms of assessment are the same, but in one respect reporting the topic is more important. For those who did not take the test but did report the material, the grade earned will count toward the total sum (of course, an A for the topic but no test is equivalent to two Es, one for the test and one for the topic). A test grade not supported by reporting the topic “weighs” nothing.
I remind you that each of you will still have the opportunity at the exam to retake those modules with whose grade you are dissatisfied. I remind you that this will not be easy. Those of you who earned 24 points out of 24 acted in the best possible way. From previous experience, I can assume that the distribution of results shown below already allows one to predict what the final distribution of grades after the course and the exam will look like.
And one more thing. Please note that under the method of summing grades used here, small point losses are compensated. If your grades are a mixture of Bs and As, in the end you will receive an A (to receive a final A, you do not need 100% of the points; it is enough to score more than 90%)!

Let me explain once again: the total earned sum is calculated as follows. One sums the overall grade for the first module and the grades for the test and topic reporting for the second module (provided that the topic for the second module has been reported). In the table, the components of the final score are highlighted in boldface, and the final sum is also underlined.
The “weight” of grades is as follows: A = 8; B = 7; C = 6; D = 5; E = 4; F = 2.
Look at how the points you have earned so far are distributed (on the ordinate axis is the number of students who earned a given number of points). One can see a group of intensively working students, some who do something in fits and starts, and quite a large number who have not yet really begun to exert themselves.
